CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Back in Bent, Adele Oscar’s house

“Nothing.” Laurel couldn’t keep the disgust out of her voice. They’d gotten the search warrant to go through Adele Oscar’s residence and so far had come up with nothing. Meanwhile, the seconds ticked down and Dylan, Vanessa and Adele were still missing.

She hadn’t slept last night. She’d convinced herself it was because she was anxiously awaiting the search warrant to come through or something from the phone company about a location hit on Adele’s cell. She was worried about her brother and sister-in-law, so tension and sleeplessness could only be wrapped up in work and fear.

Surely it wasn’t over the silent, stilted dinner she’d shared with her husband last night. That was just anxiety. They were both worried about their siblings. It was natural there’d be this wall between them. Grady and his cousins were probably breaking laws trying to find Vanessa, while she was toeing the law’s line trying to find them.

But they’d gone to bed and turned away from each other, and it had eaten at her all night.

She closed her eyes and rubbed her hands over her face. On the job wasn’t the time to think about her emotions or her marriage.

“You okay?” Hart asked, a note of gentleness in his voice. “You’re looking a little, as my mother would say, peaked.”

She opened her eyes to give Hart a sharp, fierce look. “I’m fine.”

He shrugged. “If you say so, boss.”

“I’m not your boss,” she grumbled, closing Adele’s hall-closet door, which contained nothing but meticulously organized coats and shoes.

“No, but you’re grooming me,” Hart said conversationally, taking off the latex gloves he’d used to poke through the trash.

“I’m not,” she protested, probably stupidly. She was irritated he’d figured her out but also impressed. She’d been trying to be subtle, though that had never been her strong point.

“You’ve let me take the lead on almost everything. Laurel, I’ve worked with you enough years. You never let anyone take the lead without a very specific reason, and this is your brother. There’s no way you’d let me take the lead without a reason. You’re grooming me.”

She let out a sigh. It would have been nice for him to keep thinking he was just her help, but he’d figured it out. That was good, all in all. “Okay, I’m grooming you.”

“Leaving us?” he asked, his voice devoid of any tell. Also impressive. He’d grown a lot in the past few years. She felt a kind of older-sister pride in that.

“Temporarily.”

Hart raised his eyebrows. “Never thought I’d see the day you’d…” He’d need to work on his poker face, because when he finally figured things out, his eyes got a little wide as it all clicked.

“Oh. Oh. Well, I guess congratulations are in order.”

“We’ve got a ways to go till congratulations are in order. It’s still early and no one at the department knows yet.”

He frowned. “They should know, Laurel.”

“You sound like my husband.”

“And you’re irritated I do because you know we’re both right. They should know, and you shouldn’t be running yourself so hard.
